Small Urban Restoration l Burlington, Vermont
House
and landscape were restored in a vibrant historic neighborhood in the south end
of Burlington, in which around 300 houses and cottages were developed from 1900
through the 1950s in a nice mix of Craftsman bungalows, Cape Cods, foursquares,
and Colonial Revivals. Most of the homes
are currently owned by young couples and families who enjoy the intimate,
sharing atmosphere.
Once a blank rectangular lawn, the long and narrow backyard was transformed into an outdoor space where a diverse range of activities occur for both mom and young son. Mom relaxes with friends in a lovely native stone patio embraced by a beautiful fieldstone wall. Gardens flank the edges and add color and sculpture year-round. Edibles are tucked among the perennials and provide a ritual of berry and veggie picking for both mom and son. It was equally important that the backyard is a congregating area for the neighborhood kids, so a small playground, climbing tree and lawn for soccer were integral parts of the landscape plan. Views into the backyard through the large glass sliders off the kitchen and family room provide a seamless inside outside connection, even in winter as snow drapes over the stone walls, branches and entry gate.
