Contemporary Lakeside House l Northwestern Vermont
This collaboration with architect and builder salvaged a small neglected lakeside property and created a compact, private sanctuary on the shore of Lake Champlain. An awkwardly sloping lot became a series of level places for entertainment, play, and relaxation.
The house façade and decks feature a clean, rich palette of Douglas Fir, concrete retaining walls and benches, Vermont charcoal gray slate table tops, and stainless steel which form raised veggie beds, gas fire feature bases, railings, lights and attachment details. Many forms of entertainment are functionally and tastefully organized on the site, including standard tennis, beach tennis, ping pong, fireside seating, boating, grilling, and dining opportunities.
The design creates a permaculture-based softscape while maintaining a clean, contemporary style. Drifts of edible plants and beneficial insect-attracting plants soften linear lines and provide cohesiveness throughout the landscape.
