Old Mill Park l Johnson, Vermont
The 20-acre Town-owned open space, bordered by the Lamoille River, Lamoille Valley Rail Trail and the Green Mountains, has been a community hub for outdoor recreation for the past 21 years. Luzenac America closed the talc mill and mines in the early 1990s, transformed the unsightly tailings site and donated the pristine land to the Town of Johnson. KLA was contracted to work closely with the Town Recreation Committee through a public process to identify what recreation needs were currently not being met. Next, we developed a master plan for multiple softball and soccer fields, a playground, walking path and parking, which served as the foundation for our site grading and reclamation closure plan. In 1998 the park was completed and dedicated to the Town.
