Urban Modern Home l Quebec, Canada
NOTE: Owners requested no photographs of the completed project to preserve privacy. However, visits to this unique place can be arranged.
Within a traditional Montreal neighborhood, you’ll find this secret modern haven that provides the owners respite from their busy lives as business owners and travelers. While the façade of the existing home maintains its historic quality, the landscape and renovated interior are strikingly modern.
Three distinct tiers provide expansive outdoor living space on this urban hillside property. On the lowest tier, an indoor gym and pool open up to an outdoor pool accented with midnight blue granite coping surrounded by the white limestone terrace. The west end of the pool is anchored by a mosaic of midnight blue tiles covering a tall wall with a delicate sheet of water cascading down it. Modern clay planters on pedestals stand in a row along a shallow pool of black pebbles and mimic the cityscape of streets and tall buildings beyond.
Teak used in the interior renovations becomes an exterior material in this new, modernized landscape. Flush decks for lounge chairs and a covered gazebo made of teak bring warmth and depth to the east side of the landscape. A skim of water flowing across a raised rectangular slab of polished black granite provides tranquility at the gazebo. On the balcony tier above, a fire feature and bench of polished black granite surrounded by white limestone mirrors materials used in the tiers below. The motif of 3’x3’ local limestone pavers accented by midnight blue granite provides a connecting thread to all three tiers of the landscape, and the fence of large glass panels with stainless steel posts seamlessly connects the landscape with the surrounding city vista.
