Modern Agrarian Home Brownington, Vermont
The family of this spectacular farm property outgrew the tiny old farmhouse retreat. It was replaced with a modern farmhouse that overlooks the rolling pastures with grazing animals, and the distant valley and mountain views beyond. Our work focused on siting the building, regrading the land and shifting the pond so that the composition has a unified flow and connects seamlessly with the topography and natural setting. The retaining wall of Vermont stone on the west side diminishes the size of the house and creates a sense of mystery and surprise on the walk to the main entry. The attached site wall veneered in the same Vermont stone on the east side allows the house to rest proudly on the edge of the steep decline down to the sweep of valuable farm land. Gardens are concentrated only on the kitchen side creating intimate views and on approach above the retaining wall. Everywhere else the low cut grass around the house blends with the green meadow and pastures beyond.
